Keep your salary private when dating

Discussing the cost of a shared plan is different from disclosing your income. If someone asks your salary early on, name the amount you are comfortable spending instead, and let the same privacy apply in both directions. You do not need to invent a figure.

Separate budget from income

A person may need to know whether a restaurant, ticket or trip fits your budget. That question can be answered with the amount you want to spend, not your annual salary, employer or financial history. Keep the conversation tied to the decision at hand.

Give a direct boundary

A short โ€œI keep income private while we are getting to know each otherโ€ is clearer than a long excuse. You can add the budget for this date if useful. Do not apologise for the boundary or offer a fake number to make the question disappear.

Notice the response

Someone who respects the answer can continue discussing practical costs. Repeated pressure, comparisons or demands for proof turn a personal question into a boundary problem. You may change the subject, postpone the date or decide that the exchange is not a fit.

Message examples

Answer the practical part

I keep my salary private, but Iโ€™m comfortable spending up to ยฃ30 on dinner. Does that work for the plan you had in mind?

It answers the shared-cost question while keeping income and financial history private.

Refuse the pressure

Iโ€™m not going to share a salary figure. If the budget matters, we can choose a plan that fits both of us; otherwise letโ€™s leave the question there.

It repeats the boundary and offers a practical route without inventing information.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to refuse a salary question?

No. Income is personal information. You can discuss a shared budget when needed while declining to disclose the figure behind it.

What if they say transparency requires an answer?

Transparency is not a universal right to private financial data. State what you are comfortable discussing and treat pressure after that answer as information about compatibility.
