Signal works best when both people agree to use it and know how they will find each other. You can start with a username, link, QR code or phone number, depending on what feels appropriate. Check who is sharing each detail and what you want visible before you write. Then open with one context-based topic, ask before moving to a call and remember that disappearing messages can still be copied or photographed.
Agree how to connect
Ask, โWould Signal work for you?โ If the answer is yes, decide whether you will use a username, link, QR code or number. A username can begin contact without sharing a phone number, but phone visibility and discoverability are separate settings. A username is not a permanent public profile, and Signal has no public directory of usernames.
If someone sends a QR code, check whose it is before scanning and never post it in a public group or feed. Share only the detail needed for this contact; collecting identifiers is not a trust exercise.
Check the context without claiming certainty
An opening message that names how you know each other prevents confusion: โI am Ana, from Luisโs ceramics class.โ If you do not recognise a contact, ask politely before continuing. A name or photo does not prove who is behind an account; use the context you already share and choose what you want to disclose.
Screenshots sent to an AI tool also disclose whatever appears in them. Crop names, numbers and unrelated photos, and share only content that you are authorised to share.
One topic at a time
After the greeting, return to one clear subject: a recommendation, a shared project or a question left open. Answer one part before adding another and let the other person set a pace too. A thoughtful conversation does not need a long introduction or instant replies.
If the tone changes or someone seems uncomfortable, ask what they prefer. Do not use disappearing messages to persuade someone to send intimate material: a timed message can still be captured, copied or saved by the recipient.
Calls, plans and endings
Before a voice or video call, ask: โWould a ten-minute call today suit you, or shall we keep texting?โ Set a duration and accept no. If you want to meet, agree a public place and time in the channel you both chose; a call is never an obligation.
It is also fine to close with, โThanks for talking; I am going to stop here today.โ If someone does not reply, do not chase them from another username. Respecting an ending is part of a safe conversation.
Message examples
Agreeing the channel
Would you be happy to continue on Signal? I can share my username; I would rather not give my number yet.
It asks for consent and offers a contact route that preserves the phone boundary.
A contextual opener
Hi, it is Dani from the photography workshop. I kept thinking about the camera you recommended.
It identifies the writer and continues a shared subject without making a vague or demanding request.
Before calling
Would you like a ten-minute voice call this evening, or should we keep chatting here? Either is fine with me.
It checks comfort, sets a small frame and leaves writing as an equally valid choice.
