Ask them to stop using a nickname

A nickname can sound affectionate to one person and uncomfortable to another. Name the exact word, say what you prefer to be called and avoid turning the request into an apology for having a boundary. If it continues, choose distance instead of bargaining.

State the word plainly

Use the nickname so there is no confusion about which form of address you mean. You can say it does not feel right without proving that it is objectively offensive. Your preference is enough information for the conversation.

Offer the replacement you want

Give the person your name, a shorter form or another neutral way to address you. This makes the request easy to follow, but it does not turn the conversation into a negotiation over whether the old nickname was meant kindly.

Watch what happens next

A mistake followed by a genuine correction is different from repeated use after a clear request. You can pause the chat, leave the meeting or end contact if the boundary is treated as entertainment. Respect is shown in the next behaviour, not in a promise to understand.

Message examples

Name your preference

Please donโ€™t call me โ€œprincessโ€. I know you mean it warmly, but Iโ€™d rather you use Alex or just my name.

It separates their intention from your experience and gives a clear alternative.

End the negotiation

Iโ€™ve asked you twice not to use that nickname. Iโ€™m going to step back from this conversation now; we can speak another time if youโ€™re ready to respect it.

It states the repeated boundary and chooses a consequence without insulting the other person.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to explain why the nickname bothers me?

No. You may explain if you want, but a clear preference does not require a personal history or a debate about whether the word is harmless.

What if they say I am overreacting?

Repeat the request once and notice that response as information. You do not have to persuade someone that your form of address deserves respect before taking space.
