When date tickets sell out

Sold-out tickets change the activity, not automatically the wish to meet. Say what happened, separate the event from the date itself, and offer one realistic alternative at the agreed cost or another day. Wait for agreement before spending more.

Name what changed

Check the event page or booking message, then tell them plainly that the tickets are gone. Avoid turning the news into a test of enthusiasm: someone can still want to meet, or can have been interested mainly in that event. Ask which part mattered to them.

Give one manageable option

Offer a nearby activity within the budget you had already discussed, such as coffee after work, or offer a new date for the event if tickets may return. One option is easier to answer than a list of replacements. Do not buy anything while the plan is undecided.

Respect the reason for meeting

If the event was the main reason, it is fine to say you would rather pause. That answer is clearer than pretending another plan feels the same. A change of activity can be disappointing without being anyoneโ€™s fault, and neither person owes a forced substitute.

Message examples

Keep the meeting

Saturdayโ€™s concert has sold out. Would you still like to meet for coffee at six, or would another day suit you better?

It keeps the invitation separate from the unavailable tickets and gives two easy choices.

Let the event decide

I was mainly looking forward to the concert, so Iโ€™d rather wait and see if we can find another date. I havenโ€™t bought anything yet.

It is honest about the changed reason for meeting and avoids spending money on an unagreed replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy two different tickets as a surprise?

No. A surprise purchase changes the budget and may create pressure to attend. Ask first, agree on the event and cost, and only then decide who books it.

What if they still want to meet but I do not?

Say that the event was the part you wanted and suggest pausing without blaming them. A polite change of mind is enough; you do not need to invent another reason.
