Written laughter
XD is a sideways face: X makes the eyes and D makes the mouth. The shape matters, but context matters more.
XD came before emojis and stayed because two letters can carry a full reaction. The confusion starts when it arrives alone, changes from uppercase to lowercase, or replaces a sentence. This guide separates meaning, intensity and useful replies.
What XD means
XD is a face seen from the side: X is the closed laughing eyes and D is an open mouth. It is not an acronym or a sad face. In chat it usually says that something was funny.
- XD: clear, ordinary laughter.
- XDD or XDDD: stronger laughter.
- xd: light, ironic or casual laughter.
The intensity scale
Capital letters and extra letters change the volume of the laugh. It is not an exact science, but it is a useful clue about register and energy.
- More D usually means more enthusiasm.
- Lowercase can sound casual or ironic.
- An XD with questions means more than an isolated one.
How to reply without forcing it
The best reply is not another XD. Continue the joke, add an observation or open a new topic. If a lone xd arrives after a lot of effort, accept the signal and do not interrogate it.
- Continue the joke with a concrete line.
- Change topic if xd feels like a closing signal.
- Do not ask whether they really laughed.
โ Do this
- Read the full context
- Match the register
- Add your own content
โ Avoid this
- Translate word for word
- Imitate someone else
- Use one signal alone
