How to see read receipts on Instagram: Seen in DMs
Instagram shows Seen on direct messages: where it appears, how to turn it off for one chat only, and what vanish mode changes about it.

On Instagram, Seen appears under the last message of the DM, with read receipts controlled chat by chat โ unlike WhatsAppโs global switch.
Instagram has no global switch: each conversation decides. Handy for dating calmly โ but mind what that calm communicates.
Where Seen appears
Open the DM: if the other person read your last message, you will see Seen with the time underneath. It only shows on the latest message; send another and the marker moves.

Turning it off per chat
Open the chat > tap the name at the top > Privacy and safety > Read receipts > turn them off for that conversation. They can still see when you are online depending on your activity status settings.

Vanish mode and notes
Vanish mode (swipe up in the chat) makes messages disappear on exit: no trace, no permanent Seen. Notes and Story replies follow their own visibility rules.
