How to turn on read receipts on WhatsApp: blue ticks
Turn WhatsApp read receipts on or off: where the setting lives, what changes in group chats, and what happens to your own visibility.
WhatsApp ยท settings
Read receipts are one switch: Settings > Privacy > Read receipts. What almost nobody tells you is what you lose when you turn blue ticks off.
Blue double ticks mean confirmed read, not a duty to reply. Before touching the switch, understand the trade: privacy for information.
Where the setting lives
Open WhatsApp > Settings (iPhone) or the three dots > Settings (Android) > Privacy > Read receipts. Turn it on to show blue ticks; turn it off to read without leaving a mark.
- iPhone: Settings > Privacy
- Android: three dots > Settings > Privacy
- The change applies instantly
What changes when you turn it off
You stop showing blue, but you also stop seeing everyone elseโs. It is symmetric: there is no mode where you see and they do not. In groups and broadcast lists, read receipts always show.
- Symmetric: you hide and you stop seeing
- Groups: always visible
- Status updates have their own control
When each option fits
Keep it on if you are dating: blue ticks give the chat rhythm and avoid misunderstandings. Turn it off if you obsess over being left on read. No switch cures anxiety, but not watching helps.
- Dating: better on
- Anxiety: turning off helps
- Work: depends on your role
โ Do this
- Decide calmly
- Warn if you change habits
- Read the content, not the color
โ Avoid this
- Accuse over blue ticks
- Toggle it every day
- Demand blue ticks from others
