Be direct about the likely pause: you will not check messages for a few days, or you need open-ended space. Choose words you can honour.
Avoid promises you cannot control
You may offer to write when you have room, but do not guarantee a date or exact return time if the situation is uncertain. The other person can wait or move on.

Return on your own terms
