A practical playbook
How to explain a pet allergy before meeting
Explain a pet allergy clearly, separate the person from the animal and suggest a neutral meeting place when their home is not an option for you.
A pet allergy limits where you can meet; it is not a judgement on someone who lives with animals. Say what exposure you avoid, ask for a suitable place and do not negotiate through symptoms. You can respect their home and still choose a neutral plan.
Describe the limit without judgement
Use a direct sentence: mention the allergy and exposure you avoid. You do not need to rate their pet or ask them to prove it will stay in another room. A clear limit shows that the issue is contact, not their home or character.
Choose somewhere both people can enjoy
Suggest a cafรฉ, park, museum or another neutral venue. If an outdoor condition or another animal affects your choice, include it in the discussion. Let your date help decide while keeping the boundary that you will not enter a space you cannot accept.
Respond to pressure by repeating the limit
If they say the pet will be kept away or the home has been cleaned, acknowledge the effort without promising that it works for you. Repeat your alternative and be ready to postpone. A caring response looks for a workable meeting; it does not ask you to test your boundary.
Message examples
Suggest a neutral place
I would like to see you, but because of my allergy I cannot meet in a home with pets. Shall we choose the park or cafรฉ near you?
It keeps the invitation warm, names the location limit and offers two options.
Hold the boundary
I appreciate that you cleaned, but I still cannot accept that exposure. I would rather meet somewhere neutral or leave it for another day.
It acknowledges the effort without changing the decision about the meeting place.
Questions
Do I need to explain how severe the allergy is?
Share what is needed to plan. You can say a pet home is not an option without listing symptoms or medical information. Say what exposure you avoid and keep the rest private.
What if they say the pet will not be in the room?
Thank them and still decline the home if it is not an option for you. You know which boundary you can accept. Offer a neutral place once; if the debate continues, notice whether your decision is respected.
