A practical playbook
How to Correct Your Name Naturally in a Chat
Use a quick correction for a typo, give your exact spelling or nickname, and decide what to do when the same mistake keeps returning.
A name correction can be small and still deserve clear wording. Autocorrect, a preferred nickname, and a repeated mistake each call for a different response. Say exactly what you use, then let the other person show whether they respect it.
Correct a harmless typo
If autocorrect changes one letter, fix it in the next message and keep the chat moving. You do not need to prove the mistake was offensive.
Small correction: itโs Ana, with one n. Friday still works for me.
Give the exact version
For an accent, hyphen, or nickname, write the form you actually use. Put the spelling in the message instead of asking the other person to guess.
I go by Anaรฏs, with the diaeresis, or Ana with friends. Either is fine.
Notice what happens after a reminder
One forgotten correction is easy to repair. If the same error returns, repeat the preference calmly and check whether they are trying to get it right. A second typo can still be accidental.
Iโve mentioned the spelling already; could you use it from here? If they mock the request or refuse to make an effort, you can end the exchange.
Message examples
After an autocorrect error
Small correction: itโs Ana, with one n. Friday still works for me.
It names the exact correction and returns to the plan, so a harmless typo stays small.
For a preferred form
I go by Anaรฏs, with the diaeresis, or Ana with friends. Either is fine.
It gives the spelling and nickname choice together, leaving a clear way to address you.
Questions
What if autocorrect changed it once?
Correct the spelling in the next message and carry on. A brief line is enough; you do not need to assign blame.
What if they keep spelling it wrong after I correct them?
State the spelling once more, then watch their response. If they make no effort or turn it into a joke, end the conversation.
