Ask before forwarding a personal message

Before forwarding a personal message, say who would receive it, why they need it and which excerpt you want to share. Consent to one person is not permission for a group or public post, and silence does not authorise forwarding. An anonymised summary only works when the person cannot be identified.

Name the audience and purpose

A request such as โ€œcan I show this to my friend?โ€ leaves too much unsaid. Identify the recipient and the reason, especially if the message contains a personal disclosure, photo or disagreement. The sender can then decide with real information.

Ask about the exact excerpt

A person may agree to one sentence but not the surrounding context. Say which part you want to share and whether names, profile photos or timestamps will appear. Crop or rewrite only after they agree to that specific form.

Treat no reply as no consent

If there is no answer, keep the message private or describe the issue without identifying them. Do not forward first and ask forgiveness later. If the recipient needs urgent practical information, share only what is necessary and explain the limit.

Message examples

Ask specifically

Could I show Sam the two lines where you explain the travel problem? Iโ€™d crop your name and photo; I wonโ€™t share the rest without checking again.

It names the recipient, excerpt and redaction instead of asking for vague permission.

Use a safe summary

I havenโ€™t forwarded your message. I told my friend only that Iโ€™m working out a travel issue, without your name or the details you shared.

It shows that support can be sought without transferring a private conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Does permission to show one friend cover a group chat?

No. The audience and context have changed. Ask again for the group, and explain whether members can save or forward the message.

What if the message contains information about me too?

Your own information does not give you ownership of the other personโ€™s words. Ask about the specific excerpt and remove both peopleโ€™s unnecessary private details where possible.
